The building of the Deutsche Architekturmuseum itself is a unique architectural document, charting the very process of building. A late nineteenth century villa, it was converted in the early 1980s to a design by the Cologne-based architect Oswald Mathias Ungers, who created five levels from the simple basement space with its visible load-bearing structure to the walled complex of the ground floor and the complete house within a house on the third floor. Presenting architecture and conveying the culture of building is the foremost objective of DAM. Moreover, the museum harbour a wealth of documents pertaining to the history of architecture. The museum conducts contemporary debates on the future of the built environment.
